Wired: My Little Pony Corrals Unlikely Fanboys Known as ‘Bronies’

22 Nov

Leave it to Wired magazine to summarize the Brony movement in one line:

Each day, out-of-work computer programmer Luke Allen self-medicates by watching animated ponies have magical adventures.

Yup. That’s what it’s all about, folks.

Writer Angela Watercutter does a terrific balancing act in her article posted last year.

Watercutter leads readers to that icky feeling that comes from knowing grown men are enthralled with an animated show targeted toward little girls. But, there’s also an element of humanity in it all.

Nobody’s ignoring the fact that it’s odd. Certainly not those quoted in the story, most of whom are grappling to explain themselves.

“Honestly, if someone were to have told me I’d be writing a pony blog seven months ago, I would have called them insane.”

— Shaun, 23, who runs the My Little Ponyfan site Equestria Daily.

And Watercutter thoughts on “internet neo-sincerity” rank amongst the most reasonable explanation on the unlikely fad. The thesis is that guilty pleasures have become just pleasures.

You should read that article too.
